Towards the end of last year, the Western Cape Government, in collaboration with NGOs like ORT SA CAPE, launched Year Beyond, a gap-year programme intended to give talented matriculants the opportunity to contribute to education in the province.
This year, Year Beyond volunteers assist with extra-mural activities in 24 schools, focusing on Science, Language and Mathematics development. The overlap with ORT SA CAPE is obvious and we are delighted to be involved.
Our Robotics Manager trained the Year Beyond facilitators in using the Lego Wedo Robotics and Mindstorm packages. Robotics is a branch of engineering which deals with the design, building and operation of robots. It challenges children from as young as six to develop innovative solutions to challenging problems. Minds are opened to learn new skills and harness untapped potential. At the same time, children are learning social skills like team work, leadership, confidence and creativity. All such skills contribute to successful learning in Maths, Science and Technology.
